Are High
Thread Count Bed Sheets Really Worth The Higher
Cost?
The
incredible softness of high thread count bed sheets
sets the standard for those who desire only the best
in their bedding ensembles. Though not particularly
well known for their durability, high thread count
bed sheets are said to feel thicker and softer to
the touch.
Thread counts are determined by counting the number
of horizontal and vertical threads woven together in
a square inch of fabric. These counts can range from
80TC all the way up to 1500TC.
In the
highly competitive bedding industry, thread
count has actually become more of a marketing plow
for selling luxury bed sheets than a quality
standard.
Bedding manufacturers have been known to overly
state thread counts by counting the individual plies
of a thread rather than the actual threads.
High thread count bed sheets are typically more
expensive than those with lower threat counts, but
the higher price tag doesn't guarantee an extended
product life cycle.
Good quality bed sheets start at
180TC, with anything above 200TC considered better
quality.
